“Every meal can make or break your brain.” The 30-Day Alzheimer’s Solution
In this video I create a Vegan Quesadilla inspired by the book The 30 Day Alzheimer’s Solution: The Definite Food And Lifestyle Guide To Preventing Cognitive Decline by authors Dean & Ayesha Sherzai. I also talk about their list of Neuro 9 foods that you should eat everyday if you want to prevent cognitive decline and give you a quick overview of their approach to eating for brain health.
Their list of Neuro 9 foods includes:
- Leafy greens
- Whole grains
- Seeds
- Beans and legumes
- Berries
- Nuts
- Cruciferous vegetables
- Tea, particularly green tea and oolong tea
- Herbs and spices
A good challenge would be to see if you can eat one food from each of their Neuro 9 categories each day. Stop for a minute and tally up your day to see how you do!
Ingredients in my Vegan Quesadilla:
- Fried red onions
- Canned organic black beans
- Spinach
- Cashew cream
- Salsa
- Avocado
- Salt for seasoning onions and avocado.
I basically just throw everything into a quesadilla and crisp it up in a fry pan. However since filming this video I’ve been filling the wrap, folding it over and baking it. I found that I need to use baking paper to prevent the wrap from sticking. It only takes a few minutes for the wrap to start to go crispy on the top side. When that happens I flip it over for another couple minutes to crisp the other side.
Very easy! Top with salsa and avocado if you want. You can get even more Neuro 9 foods with a serving of cruciferous vegetables like roasted Brussel sprouts or cauliflower on the side (two of my favourite side veggies – and often I’ll have both). You could also chop some fresh cilantro for on top.
