KSM-66® Ashwagandha is an extract obtained from the roots of the plants and is thought to be one of the more effective forms of the herb because traditionally the roots are used in Ayurveda (rather than other parts of the plant).
Ashwagandha is known as the King of Ayurveda herbs or Indian Ginseng. It has many benefits including being an adaptogen, which means it helps your body deal with stress. In fact, studies have shown that ashwagandha can reduce cortisol levels. Ashwagandha has also been shown in studies and anecdotally to reduce anxiety and depression, sometimes as effectively as pharmaceutical drugs but without any of the side effects.
Other benefits of ashwagandha include improved memory, reduced brain degeneration, improved immunity, balanced thyroid hormones, and lower cholesterol.
Some people find ashwagandha very relaxing and slightly sedative and, therefore, should feel better if they take it in the evening.
Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor but I have extensively researched ashwagandha and it appears to be safe with little side effects. However, everyone reacts differently so you have to listen to how your body feels. Stick with the recommended dosage on the bottle. Also, if you have a thyroid problem, particularly hyperthyroidism, you should be careful and monitor your thyroid levels with your doctor. Your doctor will most likely not know about the benefits of ashwagandha (or any other herbs and supplements) so do not expect him or her to be supportive of your choice to take it. However, should you choose to use ashwagandha, you can still ask your doctor to test your thyroid periodically to watch for any changes.
